Default 16.9.1944 "special patrols off the Dutch coast"

    Hi all,
I would like to ask if anybody can shed light on record in the ORB of Czech fighter squadrons recorded on 16.9.1944 as "Escort Wellingtons and Halifaxes and/or Fotresses carrying out a special patrol off the Dutch coast (near Hague)".

I am pretty sure it would be connected with the operation "Market-Garden" which was supposed to start the next day but I am interested what may be the aim of the "special patrol".

    TIA

    Hi Pavel

Might it be something to do with the V2? That campaign had just begun at that time and I believe the weapon was fired from the Hague area. At the beginning the British believed that the rockets were radio-controlled. The Fortresses may have been from 100 Group?

    Hi Pavel

214 Sqn (100 Gp, RCM Fortresses) certainly did a number of these 'Big Ben' patrols, looking for (non-existent, it turned out) V2 control signals. In other squadrons' ORB's I found that 214's Forts were sometimes escorted by (for example) Mosquito fighters from 23 Sqn or 515 Sqn from Little Snoring.

Four of these sorties were flown on 16/9/1944.

The Wellington(s) and Halifax(es) could perhaps have been from 192 Sqn? - they flew similar 'snooping' sorties and flew an assortment of different a/c types.

Edit: Have just downloaded and looked at 192 Sqn's ORB for Sept '44 (F.541's), and on 16/9/1944 they flew 3 Wellington and 4 Halifax "Special Patrol" sorties "40 miles off the Belgian and Dutch Coasts", plus 3 Mosquito and 2 Lightning "Special Patrol" sorties "Over Holland, south of the Zuider Zee" [Ijsselmeer]

Hi Steve and Ian, thank you for putting me in the direction of No. 100 Group. It seems to me to be the correct way.
