    Default Hind K5388, Feb 24, 1937.

    Good evening,
Could anyone tell me the names of the crew of Hind K5388 of 21 Sqdn., when it crashed on 24th February 1937 near Ticehurst, Sussex?

A friend has just pointed out a 1943 log book and files advertised on ebay and with it are some newspaper cuttings, including one of the above accident.
The newspaper description of the accident agrees with what is reported in "The K File" - the Hind struck a cottage whilst flying low and lost in bad weather.
The crew crawled out of the wreckage without serious injury, but are not named.
I am wondering whether the owner of the wartime logbook might be the observer in the Hind accident.
He may have re-mustered for pilot training.
Thank you in advance, Tony Broadhurst

    Paul,
Thank you for answering my query.
The name on the ebay logbook is Lawford R.F., so there is no obvious connection to the Hind accident, after all.

I had not included the ebay link as some forums frown upon it and I could not recall seeing any previous ebay links at RAF Commands.

My contact in Canada thought the ebay logbook would be of interest to me because of the Cornell entries. However, the two Cornell serials shown in logbook images convinced me Lawford's elementary training had been undertaken at No.33 EFTS, Caron, Saskatchewan and as I had a number of logbook copies from that particular establishment there would be little to gain from bidding on it. The possibility that the Observer in the Hind accident was "Lawford, R.F." did intrigue me. One of the first Cornell veterans I interviewed nearly twenty-five years ago undertook his elementary training at Caron and was a re-mustered Blenheim WOP/AG.

I think both Rodney Francis Lawfords are the same

Parents of 1923 Hendon birth were Edith L Clarke and Francis W Lawford

1939 Register throws up at Hove M.B., Sussex, England

Francis W Lawford 17 Dec 1871 Male Clerk Bank (Ret) Married 220 1
Edith L Lawford 14 Oct 1900 Female Unpd Dom Duties Married 220 2
    Rodney T Lawford 07 Nov 1923 Male At School Single 220 3
    Derek S Lawford 17 Jul 1925 Male At School Single 220 4

I would like to know why he kept those clippings!

The final cutting on the Ebay listing concerns a 99 Sqn machine that made a forced landing at Thorpe Thewles near Stockton on 15th Feb 1937

It should be a Heyford but I do not know serial, one tip of a lower wing hit a tree during a forced landing

Can't find any info on Catterick incident

    Paul,
A perusal of "The K File" reveals this...
    Heyford Mk.IIA, K4037. Delivered to 2 ASU 15.11.34; 10 Sqn 13.12.35 coded G; 99 Sqn coded B; 149 Sqn 5.37.
Engine ; forced landed in field and hit hedge; tipped up, Shotton Farm, near Sedgefield, Co. Durham, 15. 2.38; SOC 18.2.38 as BER.

I acknowledge that compared with "The K File" report, the date is exactly one year out and K4037 is reported re-assigned from 99 Sqn to 149 Sqn by the time February 1938. However, Thorpe Thewles is about half way between Stockton-on-Tees and Sedgefield.

    Too much of a coincidence?
    Tony Broadhurst
