Default S/Ldr Charles Francis Derbishire 11 Sqd

Can anyone help me please with the loss of a Blenheim of 11 Squadron in North Africa on 11 December 1941.

I would like to know from which airfield they had taken off and where (ish) the aircraft was lost.

The crew are named on the Alamein Memorial.
Squadron Leader Charles Francis Derbishire (37161)
Flight Sgt Leslie Joseph Macey (749446)
Sgt James Charles Bryden Webster (938305)

    Cheers

    Ken,

From "Bomber Losses in the Middle East and Mediterranean, Vol 1 1939 - 1942" by David Gunby and Pelham Temple, pg 108:

Blenheim IV Z7797. Took off 1015, LG 76, detailed to bomb the aerodrome at Derna if there was sufficient cloud cover. Shot down over Bomba Bay at 1145 by a Bf109 (Ofw. Albert Estenlaub, 1/JG27). All are commemorated on the Alamein Memorial.
    Regards,

    Dave

The ORB shows the raid was on Derna in Libya. Google (historyofwar.org) shows the squadron was based at this time at Landing Ground 116 which was in Egypt near the north coast. The co-ordinates are shown on Wiki. The fact they are commemorated on the Alamein Memorial infers their bodies weren't recovered and the ORB merely stated they failed to return. So presumably somewhere between LG-116 and Derna.
