Default P/O William Brian Wheelwright 41763 RAF

    Hi,

Above officer killed in flying accident August 18th 1940 with 218 Squadron. Parents both English from Dorset.

On examining some old association documents a letter shows that Wheelwright was brought up in Canada and entered the RAF after joining the RCAF?

Is there any way of confirming this, interestingly his name appears on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial web site.

    TIA

    Steve,

The CVWM started putting Canadians who died in RAF service a couple of years ago.

Both Arthur Graham and Sarah Harriet "Hattie", nee Trotter, appear in the 1901 Canadian census as well as the 1916 Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta census. No sign of your subject who, from CWGC, wasn't born until 1917. They lived in Kneehill County, Alberta.

    Regards,

    Dave

    Steve,

Here is the entry from Les Allison's, Canadians in the Royal air Force (Roland: Author,1978), p.203:

    Killed in Action.

WHEELWRIGHT, William Brian, P/O (41763), (from) Carbon, Alberta.

Enlisted Dec. /38 and joined No.218 Sqdn. in France early in 1940, to fly Blenheims, They returned to Mildenhall, Suffolk in June and he was k/a on Aug. 18/40 coming home from a raid. He is buried in Long Stanton Cem., Cambs.

Allison's work is now dated, and some of his information was simply incorrect, even at the time of publication.

    London Gazette 24 March, 1939.

The undermentioned are granted short service commissions as Acting Pilot Officers on probation on the dates stated - 4th March, 1939:-

    William Brian WHEELWRIGHT.
