    Default Sergeant H I Wood

On 26 June 1937 the MASS FLIGHT event at Hendon Display an eliminating heats for the Dive Bombing event were held. Sergeant H I Wood is reported to have finished first in No. 1 (Bomber) Group, then first in Bomber Command and finally first against other Commands to win the entire event. He was presented to HM King George VI.

I am unable to identify this chap, I am always suspicious of I's because they usually turn out to be J or T or something similar, please can anybody help me.
    thanks Pete

    Pete, Hi
    Sgt H I Wood
At AIR 78/174/3 I-188 R Col 3 Down is a 365803 H I Wood (Block 363281-370000 (Highest 366493) RAF Boy Entrants wef 01-Jan-24). That might put his birth yr as around 1909?
Could tick quite a lot of yr boxes? FMP has a lot of H I Wood in the "In The News" - but I don't subscribe to that (but somebody else might?!).

    Pete

The event was reported in a few newspapers who record him as Pilot Sergeant Woods, with a 's' at the end, if that's any help.

Flight Magazine of July 1st 1937 reported that the winner of the dive bombing competition was a Hind pilot, although it doesn't name him. Might help ID his squadron?

    Regards

    Simon

It's in relation to the death of S/L Harry STEWART 5/1/1931#

"Leading Aircraftsman Henry Irving Wood '365803, the other occupant, of the aircraft, was I slightly injured."

By 1946 to 1948 he is traveling to the Canada via USA as a Civil Servant

    BTW

" That might put his birth yr as around 1909?"

    Almost spot on

Wood Henry Irving 1908 — 1908 England & Wales Births 1837-2006 Uxbridge, Middlesex, England
Wood Henry Irving 1909 — 1911 1911 Census For England & Wales Norwood, Uxbridge, Middlesex, England

Wood Henry Irving 1908 — 1946 British & Irish Roots Collection Americas
Wood Henry Irving 1908 — 1948 British & Irish Roots Collection Americas

    However

    ADMINISTRATIVE AND SPECIAL DUTIES BRANCH

The undermentioned are granted commissions for the duration of hostilities as Pilot
Officers on probation on the dates stated: —
    10th May 1940.
    Henry Irving WOOD (79769)

Note he is not promoted from a rank on a airman Service number, maybe he left and rejoined RAF ??
