    Default 34134 W/C George Howie GATHERAL - 418 Sqn

    Morning,

The abovementioned pilot became the first OC of 418 Sqn in November 41. If we exclude what we can find in the LG, this officer seems to have had a very discreet career. Does anyone know more about the various positions he could have taken before and after 418?

    Thanks

    Phil

Not a lot of help, but it might narrow the search(es). Persons born in "foreign parts" are often the children of 'professionals' (doctors, missionaries, embassy/consular staffs, etc), and sometimes gravitate to the INT fields?

    Phil,

There's a little bit about Gatheral in Eyes of the Night by Bamford & Collier.

(pg.90) "The CO of 256 Squadron was Squadron Leader W. Gatherall [sic.], a medium-term officer who had only recently returned from Singapore. He was judged by most to be a good, efficient officer but he had little experience of modern aircraft or the tactics used by Fighter Command."

(pg.106) [concerning the night of 7/8 May 1941] "Squadron Leader Gatherall [sic.] and the gunnery leader Flying Officer D.S. Wallen, were forced to abandon Defiant N3500. They were engaged in combat with a Ju 88 over Liverpool and Walden [sic.] claimed to have scored a number of hits around the enemy aircraft's wing roots. However they were hit by return fire which damaged their Defiant's Glycol tank and that caused the cockpit to fill with smoke. The two airmen baled out at 0140 and made safe landings in Widnes, while the Defiant crashed near St Helens. There is some evidence to suggest that Squadron Leader Gatherall's [sic.] Defiant was shot down by one of his own crews. A 256 Squadron air gunner, flying on the next allocated flight level below him reported opening fire on an unidentified aircraft at about the same time. It is thought that Gatherall's [sic.] aircraft lost height and in the heat of the battle was identified as an enemy bomber."

(pg.131) "Squadron Leader Gatherall's [sic.], who had been CO of 256 Squadron since December 1940, was posted to 54 OTU (Night-Fighter) at Church Fenton on 1 September [1941], to train on Beaufighters."

    Hope that is some use.

    Regards,
    Tom
