    Default P/O. H.J.R. Dunn 87 Squadron

    Hi,

This RAF pilot made a emergency landing in Belgium on 10/11/1939 (Hurricane L1619). He was able to escape from a Belgian prison and returned to his unit.

On May 9,1940 he was injured when his Hurricane overturned during the landing.
Did he return to the UK ? What happened with him ?
    He died on 1/06/1940.

Many thanks in advance and best regards

    Luc

    Luc,

He must have returned to his unit after the 9 May 1940 landing crash because on 19 May 1940 Dunn was again involved in an air combat. This time he bailed out from Hurricane L1620 near Orchies, France after combat with Me-109s of II/JG2.
This according Norman Frank's Fighter Command Losses, Vol. 1.

In Peter Cornwell's book, it pretty much says the same and that he was admitted to a hospital with burns. He must have had a quick recovery, because on 20 May 1940 Cornwell's book says that Dunn crashed on landing in L1964 with the pilot believed unhurt!

See also this thread on http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4828&postcount=11
that again puts a slightly different light on things.

It is of note that Dunn is buried in England. Perhaps he was repatriated home because of his injuries and sadly died on 1 June 1940?

    Regards,

    Leendert

    Hi Luc
Dunn is on CWGC as being on 87 Sqn which at the time of his death had been moved up to Church Fenton in N Yorkshire. His death is registered in the 2nd Qtr of 1940 at Wharfedale also in Yorkshire. This suggests he was still on duty at the time on a Sqn that had been pulled out of France. They moved from Merville to Debden on 22/May 40 and on to Church Fenton on 24/May/40.(Jefford's RAF Squadrons). We can't be certain but it could be that he died flying near his new base which is close to the territory covered by the Wharfedale Registry Office. His body was clearly taken home to Hertfordshire which is further South and was probably where his Wife lived. His parents came from Bristol to the West. It still leaves a lot of loose ends.
    Regards

    Default P/O H J R Dunn

    Hi all,
According to Perry Adam's book 'Hurricane Squadron-No 87 Sqn. at War 1939-1941',P/O Dunn was killed in a flying accident at Yeadon which I believe is 10-15 miles NW of Leeds. However,as he gives the date of his death as 6 July 1940,some other confirmation of this is probably required.
    Hope this helps,
    Regards,Mark.

How about him being killed in the following incident
1.6.40 Hurricane I P3519 87 Sqn near Yeadon Dived into Ground

His death is registered in the 2nd Qtr of 1940 at Wharfedale also in Yorkshire. I assume this is Burley in Wharfedale . Yeadon is nearby
