    Default Help needed- Geography quiz

Hi all, I have checked several maps but I am still not able to find out the definitive answer so I would like to ask members for help in a form of little quiz:-)

If I would like to refer the position approx. 63N00 06W30 (north from Faroe Islands) what would be correct?

    1) Norwegian Sea
    2) North Sea
    3) Northern Atlantic

    TIA

I have had a very similar conundrum I think I settled on North Atlantic. Too far north for North Sea, but too far South for Norwegian Sea. But I might be wrong.

I would say it was North Atlantic as it is probably too far west to be the Norwegian Sea (The Sea of Norway on some charts). Incidentally we once knew the North Sea as The German Sea but I believe this was changed by the early 20th Century.

I would agree with PNK, Pavel. See map at https://www.google.com/search?q=norw...uKs3SoM:&vet=1.

    See also https://www.magn.fo/en/facts-about-the-faroe-islands.

    The wartime airfield of Vagar was at 62d 03m 56s N, 07d 17m 09s W.

Hi chaps, thank you for your opinions. I know the question is quite tricky.
After changing my opinion several times - my final conclusion is the North Atlantic as the best option.

    Hi folks,

According to the 1953 convention as refined from a previous report in 1940, courtesy of the International Hydrographic Organization at this web page, (https://iho.int/en/standards-and-specifications ), see reference S-23 (https://iho.int/uploads/user/pubs/st...d3_1953_EN.pdf ), the position 63N00 06W30 is a shade under 23 nautical miles inside the southern limits of the Norwegian Sea.

Courtesy of some plotting with the tools on Google Earth!

No doubt for wartime purposes the boundaries of such bodies of water would have fluctuated just as much as has been debated here.

I do enjoy these mapping challenges :)

    All best

Hi Pierre, many thnaks for your valuable post! S-23 was exactly what I was looking for - very useful document for understanding - even if it is post-war. I have store it for my further researches.
Anyways for my 1945 article I would stay with the North Atlantic.
