Default 164555 Maurice John Hills, 166 Sqn - DFC citation?

    Hello everyone

Can anybody tell me if there is a citation anywhere for the D.F.C. awarded to Maurice John Hills of 166 Squadron, gazetted December 7th 1945?

I see from the www.raf166squadron.com website that he was posted there in November 1944.

    Many thanks

    Simon

    HI Simon,

No citation in Nick and Carol Carter's volume 1 of "The Distinguished Flying Cross And How It Was Won 1918-1995" I'm afraid. If someone can give me an idea of where to look in the AIR2 citations at TNA, I'd be glad to grab a copy next month when I'm up there.

Sorry I can't be of more immediate help.

Thanks for checking Greg, much appreciated.

I've found him in the 166 Sqn ORB, in the crew of F/Lt. Cyril Geoffrey Keyte, 173050, also awarded the D.F.C., gazetted November 16th 1945. Crew as follows, order as per the O.R.B. (does that make Hills the F/Eng?), all posted to 166 Sqn November 10th 1944:

    F/Lt. C. G. Keyte
Sgt. S. Strachan [1021666 Stuart Strachan]
    F/O F. M. Shears [1600900/147110 Frederick Michael Shears]
    F/O M. J. Hills
    Sgt. T. Robinson [2205001]
    Sgt. R. A. Darke, R.A.A.F. [412024?]
Sgt. F. Atkins [1898352 Fred Atkins]

    Hi Simon,

The service number you have for Darke comes back to a F/Sgt Victor Carl McQuade, who was killed on No. 27 OTU 14 June 1943.

http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/NameSearch.aspx offers five "Darke"s, none with the initials you have.

    Regards,

    Dave

Thanks for the replies Dave and Col.

The Service Number for Darke comes from the 166 Sqn website, and I'd already tried to find it on the NAA.gov.au website and noted that it was linked to McQuade - hence the question mark. The November 1944 O.R.B. From 540 records the Keyte crew's posting, and seems to confirm Darke's Service No. as A.412024.

Many thanks for the crew information Col, and for the list of ops.

    Regards

    Simon

The most likely source for a DFC recommendation in this case would be AIR 2/8772 at Kew.

    Hi there,
Darke is 412024 Ronald Arthur Darke, can be found in AIR78/42/3, page 80. A confusing service number.
    Regards.

    Thanks for that, much appreciated.

Veering off topic a bit - so if he's in Air 78, he's not Australian...?

So it might seem. Looking through some entries for the crew in the 166 Sqn O.R.B., no serial numbers are appended for any of the crew as they are usually for non
    -RAF aircrew.
    Regards
