Default Fg Offr Frank Herbert Tyrrell RAFVR 1380348

    Hello again,
I am trying to find details of FO Frank Herbert Tyrrell from Southampton. He was at 55 OTU. He flew with 111 sqn on the Dieppe Raid as a Sgt, being shot down by flak, but rescued after 5 hrs in his dinghy I cannot find commission details on LG. He left 111 sqn to 1 Delivery Flt at Speke. After this nothing. I believe he rose to FO and after the war married in Switzerland.
Any help would be great. Thank you. Roy

A family tree on ancestry.co.uk records that he was born on January 7th 1918 at Southampton, and died in 1993 in Los Angeles. Married Marion Cassell in 1941.

He's on several passenger lists for sailings to New York from Southampton in autumn 1947.

    Frank Herbert Tyrell
    Nov 1940(?) Enlisted 1380348 in Block 1375001-1400000 RAFVR Euston 01-Aug-40 to 30-Nov-41 (TNA AIR 78/161/4 Image 119).
So that quoted Number is his Enlisted Number, not his Officer’s Number. Strange his Cmd doesn’t come up on the LG?

From the family tree, it appears his surname was originally Woolgar - his father and brother had Woolgar as their surname, and his birth was registered at South Stoneham, Hampshire, as Frank H T Woolgar.

Many thanks to Peter, Chris and Simon,
This one is a puzzle after late 1942, with no Commission details.
I wonder if he reverted to the family name Woolgar?

    Hello TyrrellIA,
You are most welcome to RAF Command Forum,
I have been trying to find details of your late fatther Frank for many years. Any details of his RAF career would be fantastic. After enlisting on 1-8-40 at RAF Euston, London where next. What EFTS unit did he go to and dates please. Then to SFTS and date arriving and leaving. He then went to 55 OTU at Annan. He was shot down on by flak in spitfire W3814 on 19-8-42 and spent 5hrs in the sea before being rescued by HSL186.
Any details of his RAF posting after 24-10-42 would be fantastic.
    I am available on royDOTnixonAThotmailDOTcoDOTuk.
