The inquest into his death was reported in the newspapers at the time. The Lincolnshire Free Press of November 20th 1939 reported that he was accidentally shot in the chest while taking over guard duty, and died almost immediately. A colleague's gun went off in the pilot's locker room, as the rifle was being handed to Holmes. A verdict of 'Accidental death' was returned.
