Default Looking for information - Senior Officers Course No.5 - Rollestone Camp, circa 1941

A friend has been looking through her family photos and has discovered a number showing her grandfather (S/Ldr R.E.Barrett) including the attached which shows him at Rollestone Camp (Salisbury Plain) alongside some very notable officers who were all attending "Senior Officers Course No.5".

I have decided to try to find out what I can about her grandfather (he died on 28 November 1961 and she does not remember him) as well as the other faces in the photo - some of whom, e.g. G/Capt G.S.M.Insall, V.C., M.C. and A/Cdre H.M.Probyn, D.S.O. are well known.

If anyone can assist I'd be pleased to hear from you!

    Hi

This would probably have been an Anti-Gas Course

Perhaps your man is Richard Edward Barrett who was commissioned as a T/2Lt in the RAF Administration Branch wef 19 Aug 18, and appears to have served through to WW2. Regards, Terry

A very long shot!! But do we know who any of the Instructors might have been on this "Gas Course"?

Fg Off Robert Tandy MM RAF was certainly an instructor at Rollestone at this time, being posted to the Anti Gas School as a SNCO prior to its move from Uxbridge to Salisbury Plain (in 1939). He remained at the unit after he was commissioned in June 1941.

Whether he instructed this particular course, is not clear!

Edit - AIR 29/714/4 carries the RAF Anti-Gas School, Rollestone Camp ORB 1939 June-1945 Sept. If anyone has a copy, I'd dearly love a quick look up on the above officer!

In fond memory of Corporal James Oakland AGC (RMP), killed in action in Afghanistan on 22 October 2009. Exemplo Ducemus.
