Default F/O Anthony John Aubrey ELLWOOD 150442 RAF 1952

This officer came to my interest as the pilot of Sunderland ML766 at Pembroke Dock on 14th November 1944 when it was DBR following a loss of control whilst taxiing on the step.

A check on the MOD roll of honours shows he was killed on 16th September 1952 whilst posted to RAF Driffield.

An Ancestry search has a newspaper cutting showing he was the son of Air Marshal Sir Aubrey Ellwood KCB DSC and that he was killed as a result of a flying accident near Bridlington on the 16th. A farm worker, Mark Harrison, was also killed by flying debris from the aircraft as it crashed.

I cannot find any reference to this crash anywhere else. Can anyone assist with any further details.

    Thanks very much in advance

    Chris

Adding to Col’s input, Air Britain log on the Meteor (Winter 2009) confirms VT127 as the aircraft. To quote: “ Mushed into ground out of cloud during aerobatic practice, Carnaby 16.9.52; F/O ATA Ellwood killed”.

A newspaper report of the inquest proceedings can be seen in the Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail 19 September 1952.
