    Default War Service Badge

    Hi all,

I would like to ask if anyone came across a term "War Service Badge" in RAF/RCAF service record?

I found the note about this award in one RCAF record and I would like to know more about this as this is the first time I saw it.

    Does it means this badge?:

I will be thankful for following info:

    1) is there available a list of number of awarded badges?
    2) what were the criteria for the award?

    TIA

    Hi Pavel
The Badge that my father recieved after his RCAF service was the General Service one: http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/remembers/sub.cfm?source=collections/cmdp/mainmenu/group08/gs.
He also had a slightly fancier one with red and blue enamel. I think these were very common as it went to anyone who had at least 3 months overseas service. I believe it was given on leaving the services to those that were honourably discharged. These were fairly important in the First War where sometimes men in civillian clothes were assumed to be neglecting their country's service and sometimes handed a white feather by women as a mark of their cowardice, when in fact they had already served at the front. This showed that they had done their duty for their country which was very important at that time.

    Hi Dave,

    thanks for your comment.
It is quite interesting why he obtained the different badge - I was supposing that as RCAF member he will receive the RCAF one.

Could anybody else made me clear how it was with this types of badges?

    Thanks

    Pavel,

RAF personnel who were discharged through invalidity or wounds attributable to service during WW2 and who did not qualify for a service medal or campaign star were awarded the 'King's Badge for War Service'. This small round badge pin was also given to the other arms and services, Coastguard, Home Guard, Merchant Navy etc in order to provide a visible symbol of a person's service. The badges came in a small square carboard box and were not numbered. I am not sure how many were presented during the last war.

As you have seen, there was a very similar system in play for Canadian personnel, although this time, persons who were discharged after completing their terms of service were also included. Each badge was numbered and in addition the recipient recieved a small certificate stating that the holder was entitled to wear the badge (there was a penalty for fraudulent use!). I am reliably informed that it is not possible to research these badges.

    Hope this helps a little

    Rgds
