Default No. 91 GSU, RAF Gamston, fall of 1944

    Hi all,
all what I know from the veteran reminiscences they were delivering Wellingtons to and from MUs, aircraft storage even scrapyard.

I have read GSU may stand for Group Support Unit or Group Servicing Unit - what is correct?

Any additional reading about this unit will be much appreciated. So far I have found only one reference from 1943:
    https://books.google.cz/books?id=zHu...%20RAF&f=false

Any help will be much appreciated.

    TIA

Well Pavel I am surprised that you don't have the researcher's bible "RAF Flying Training and Support Units since 1912" by Sturtivant and Hamlin.

They record for No 91 Group

    Formed 11/5/42 ex No 6 Group as No 91 Operational Training Group (later Bomber OTU Group) in Bomber Command at Abingdon to control a number of bomber OTUs;

They have GSU as "Group Support Unit" which were structures introduced in the formation of 2TAF. No 91 GSU is not listed.

    They list
No 91 Group Servicing Section formed 15/12/42 at Harwell; 15/2/44 Wellesbourne Mountford; disbanded 10/44 (8 gangs).

    Hi chaps,

@ Steve - I have the "researcher's bible" you have mentioned but as you have later stated the unit in question is not listed there and No 91 Group Servicing Section does not fits to my needs as according to the veteran he was with No. 91 GSU based at Gamston since October or November 1944 till January 1945... So that was the reason why I have asked for hlep here hoping someone may have another and better source.

@ Malcolm - thanks Malcolm, I have already checked it at your site on RAF Gamston page:-)

Sure the veteran maybe wrong as his original statement was "Ferry flight No. 31 G.S.U. RAF Gamston" so after some research I came to conclusion he mean No. 91 GSU. So it may be also No. 91 GSS.

So I have still very little...

Hi all, I have found out that there was published a booklet "The History of RAF Stations Ossington and Gamston" by W. Taylor - any member have this one on his shelf?

To make it even more confusing - http://www3.telus.net/MJD/RAF1/RAFotu.htm stated:

    Gamston Airfield
History: Opened as satellite to 14 (P) AFU Flying Training Command at Ossington. Flying Oxfords until May 1943. Station then transferred for training to 93 Group Bomber Command. June 1943 C Flight of 82 OTU with Wellington III and X, Martinets. Renumbered 86 OTU in early 1944, disbanded October 1944. Then transferred to 7 Group Bomber Command November 1944. Only flying unit 93 Group Disposal Unit which was disbanded January 1945.

It seems to me I got lost...
