    Default Air Mnistry Query

    Hello All

I wonder if anyone has any information on an E W Handley who was head of S7 in 1956 and one of his associates A N C Haynes.

I am also looking for information on what the function of AR9 was and a chap called Mr Beckass around the same time - may have something to do with records.

    TIA

    Mike

    Mike, Hi,

Got something on E W Handley (but not a lot). Nothing on A N C Haynes, and I think Beckass might be a typo?

E W Handley Service number 11080 Regiment Inns of Court Officer Training Corps

    https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...1217/page/3152 12th Feb. 1910. 2nd Lt. E. W. Handley.

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...pplement/14809 29 Oct 1918 KRRC T/2 Lt E W Handley resigns his Commission on apt to the RAF

https://search.findmypast.co.uk/reco...L-IK%2F5319302 He was an Asst Secretary in the Dept of the Perm-Under Sec for Air in 1946.

By 1956 he is still in Air Min but has collected a CBE at some stage.

    Best I can do!

Thank you very much Peter. Indeed my man as CBE confirms.

You are correct about Beckass - It should be Beckess - my eyesight I'm afraid

    Mike,

    Arthur Beckess
    b. 29 Aug 1899 Reg Marylebone 1a 528.
    m. Q3 1927 m Winifred M Eller Reg Brentford 3a 377 (no E&W Reg progeny)
HCO (Higher Clerical Officer) Air Ministry 1937
Air Ministry 1946 (rank not known)
Air Ministry 1959 (rank not known, but poss Senior Clerical, or even Principle?) having picked up an MBE (but an MBE prob indicates his grade maxed at Senior?).
Not in 1960, so prob reached 60 (retirement age). That would make birth around 1900? QED.
    d. Q3 1973 Reg Sutton 5e 391

Got same prob with my shuftiscopes - not as good as they might be!!

Not an answer I'm afraid, but as Peter seems to have some inside knowledge I do have a similar question. I am after identifying a Mr Taigle who was apparently Director of Works at the Air Ministry in 1941. He was a passenger aboard Sunderland L5803 when it was shot at by a Kurier on 14th November 1941. It was a 95 Squadron aircraft on route from Gibraltar to Mount Batten. Sgt Terence McCorry was killed in the incident.

    Thanks

    Chris, Hi,
It looks as if we might have the same problem as Beckass/Beckess (above) - i.e. a typo. Taigle seems to be a very rare Surname. I had a quick look through the AMWD staff "wiring diagram" for May 1939. Couldn't find any name like that. If you've got the pax manifest, can you check the spelling (and/or any possible alternatives)?

    Peter,

I got the name from a casualty report as written. I agree it is probably a misspelling as I couldn't find anything close either. I may pull the file again when Kew is open but as I recall it was exactly as written.

    Thanks

He was probably not Director of Works at the Air Ministry in 1941 but at the Directorate of Works - The top people of this are on Air Force list Sept 1941 - But can't see him so maybe lower Civil Servant Grade - So only Officer level grades on it - I seem to recall from my brief time at MoD I was an AC1 equivalent!

    Paul/Chris (et al)

    There is a:-

    Arthur Ebenezer Taigel
    b. Q2 1901 Reg West Ham 4a 415
Enlisted RAF 266912 issued from 1 Jun 1918 (no LG hits)
    m. Q2 1925 Hilda M Corby Reg St Giles 1b 1038 (no obvious E&W progeny)
    d. Q4 1966 Croydon 5a 656

Don't know what rank he got to. But it is just possible he might have been some sort of "gopher" in AMWD?
