    Default 51 Sqn experts.

    Hi All,

F/L Richard Emlyn Hughes 1375468 a W/Op who did 20 Ops with 158 Sqn before transferring to 51 Sqn on 15 January 1944 and was awarded a DFC and it was in the LG 15 September 1944. His family has contacted the 158 Sqn Association to find out why he was awarded a DFC. Does anyone know if it was for a specific action or an end of tour DFC.

    Thanks,

    John.

    Assistant Archivest for 158 Sqn.

Does his family have his service record ? If so, there should be reference number pertaning to the DFC award, such as A777666/45, which will be the file in the NA containing the details to his DFC citation.

Not sure if they have his service file, they now live out here in Australia, so it might take a while to get it.

So awkward doing these searches from a distance. First thing, ask them if they have the service record, is there a reference to 'DFC' and a date of London Gazette, and a reference number ? You can punch this number in TNA search, and if it brings up a file reference such as 'Decorations, Medals, Honours and Awards (code 30) Non immediate awards to Allied Air Force Personnel' you can maybe order a copy (not sure how its done, maybe someone else can enlighten us)Another route is to look in the book 'The DFC and it was Won 1918-1995'-Nick and Carol Carter, there should a reference to that award, and sometimes, the whole citation written. Again, that book is in TNA library.

    Hi

1375468 was his Airman s/n, when he was commissioned he was given the number 169135.

His DFC was announced in the LG on 15 Sep 1944 and there is no citation so it probably wasn't an Immediate Award but awarded at the end of his tour.

1375468 was his NCO service number. On being commissioned he was allocated 169135. He was awarded the DFC in the London Gazette published on 15th September 1944. Given the time of the award it is likely the recommendation was made whilst posted to 51 Squadron, although his previous service with 158 Squadron would have been referenced. Bomber Command awarded loads of DFCs and DFMs especially in 1944 and 1945. The files containing the recommendations and citations at the National Archives are very difficult to search with each file usually containing some 300 recommendations. BY searching for some of the DFM entries in the same London Gazette in Fold3 you may be able to narrow it down. AIR 2/9276 seems to be a good place to start. It is pointless ordering a copy of this file from afar as it would likely be enormous and may not contain the details you are after. If you remind me when we are back to normal and Kew is open again I can have a look for you.
