Default S/L Harvey Nelson SWEETMAN RNZAF 40992

    Hello again,
Could some one please tell me when Sgt Sweetman was with 2 EFTS at New Plymouth what type aircraft he would have flown in May 1940 and his possible dates for arrival and posting.
When did Sweetman join 3 sqn in 1944 and when did he become CO of this unit, also when did he leave 3 sqn. In 'Fighter Sqns of the RAF' by MacDonald for 3 sqn it says Acting SL Sweetman destroyed one Me262 taking off. No date is given. There is no mention in Victory Claims' 1944/5 of a claim.
Any help would be most helpful.
    Thanks, Roy

    Roy,

    Re: S/L Sweetman's Me 262 claim:

    26 November, 1944.

The Second Tactical Air Foce was operating Tempest patrols during the 26th and aircraft of 3 Squadron strafed Rheine, Squadron leader Sweetman damaging one Me 262 and Flying Officer R Dryland and Flight Sergeant Cole another.

    And ...

    26 November, 1944.

At 1040 on 26th two Tempest pilots of 80 Squadron pursued a Me 262, which they claimed to have damaged near Helmond. Eight more of these aircraft from 3 Squadron were ordered to fly to Rheine where two Me 262s were seen on the ground at nearby Hopsten, one being claimed destroyed and one damaged. However on of the successful pilots, Plt Off Cole DFC, who had been one of the unit's leading destroyers of V-1s, and who had been the first RAF pilot to gain a solo victory over the Me 262, was hit by flak over the target and baled out becoming a prisoner.

    Hi Col,
Once again your information is spot on with the claim for 26-11-44 by 3 sqn. I have rechecked my 'Victory Claims 1944 on this date but it is not recorded. Keep up the good work and many thanks,
    Roy
