Default Circumstances surround loss of RAF 209 Sq Catalina Ib S/N FP107 8/7/1944 Seychelles

    Aircraft Accident / Loss Entry
Date of Crash 08 Jul 44 Aircraft Name Catalina Ib Serial Number FP107
Unit 209 Sqdn Operating Airfield Country

Greetings, Does anyone know anything regarding the circumstances of the loss of this aircraft ?

One of the crew William HATTON (1116266) Air Gunner, is buried Victoria (Mont-Fleuri) Cemetery, Seychelles, the other crew members are commemorated on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.

is it safe to assume the aircraft was lost over sea and only Sgt HATTON's body was found ?

Would this likely be an accident , so late in the War ?

    Many thanks

The Page2 of the ORB - viewable/downloadable here https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ils/r/D8393397 mentions eight survivors - seven of whom were injured. It does not give the aircraft serial number FP107 but merely the letter

Can you enlighten the rest of us what the 3rd line in your initial post means?
"Unit 209 Sqdn" (that is OK!) Then "Operating Airfield Country" (that is very odd).

From page 4 of AIR 27/1295/14 (Record of Events) see https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ls/r/D8393398:

The aircraft was on detachment to Mauritius and had completed an anti-submarine sweep with 14 on board. On attempting to land downwind, with a heavy swell and chop running, the Catalina touched, somersaulted, landed on its back and broke up.

The names of all the crew are listed in the same reference.

    Brian

    Hello,

This incident was covered on the old board (Twice! ), 10/08/2004 & 28/04/2006.

The late Ragnar Ragnarsson cleared up the identity etc., then. Only 1116266 F/Sgt (FME) William HATTON was mentioned by name.

I corresponded with the late Henk Welting concerning this incident (there was a member of the RAAF involved). I provided Henk with a list of names of those aboard 209 Sqn Catalina IB FP107.

Here is the list of those aboard FP107, in my file on the RAAF member (AUS414149 F/O William John MENAGH RAAF), mentioned earlier:

    KILLED IN ACTION.
    1116266 F/Sgt (FME/Air Gnr.) William HATTON RAFVR

    MISSING BELIEVED KILLED IN ACTION.
981622 Cpl (?) Francis Neil LAWRENCE RAFVR
577570 F/Sgt (WOM) Raymond Edward PIPER RAF
    1077994 F/Sgt (W.Op.) Ernest RIGBY RAFVR
163076 P/O (2nd Pilot) John Meirion ROBERTS RAFVR
    1269105 F/Sgt (W.Op.) Hylton Archie STARES RAFVR

    WOUNDED OR INJURED IN ACTION.
CAN J/17805 F/O (Capt./Pilot) Robert McLaren BIRNIE RCAF (Amended, Thanks again Chris)
    AUS414149 F/O (?) William John MENAGH RAAF
CAN R/94203 LAC (?) Edgar H. SMITH RCAF
1325337 AC (?) Norman Alexander THOMPSON RAFVR

    UNINJURED.
1319146* W/O (?) Frederick Harold CUNNINGS RAFVR (Service number should read 1310146 - Thanks Chris)
1378713 LAC (?) Percy HOBSON RAFVR
52515 F/O (?) Lionel John HOWELL RAF (twice MID)
    48998 F/Lt (?) John WHITAKER RAF

    *
    1319146 was known to belong to: Sgt (A.B.) Ronald William Henry BOARD RAFVR - + 9/10/1943 - 429 Sqn RCAF - BCL4/356.

Anyone who can fill the gaps, provide updates, please do so!

The uninjured Warrant Officer was 1310146 Frederick Harold CUNNINGS
so just a slight typo on the service number

    Chris,

Thanks for that (corrected). I haven't updated the listing for a couple of years. Not my typo, that's how the service number was presented in the crew listing in Menagh's undigitised A705.
