Default Help with some Polish names, please

    Hello,

The following Polish names appear in the diary of a New Zealand pilot who was instructing at Penrhos during late May - early 1940.

    Antonow
    Cwynar
    Kaluga
    Kaluza
    Kula
    W/C Makowski
    Ostowicz
    Pilch (or Pitch)
    Captain F/L Scynar
    Vicz

The writer admits he may not have got the spelling correct with some of the names. I would welcome corrections and/or full names if anyone here should know of them.

    TIA,
    Errol

    Hi Errol,

Possibly (knowing that there are many possibilities, I took airmen with a pre-PAF formation service number )

Cwynar Stanisław (76610) later DFC. OC 300 Sqn in July 1941.
Kałuża Mieczysław Ludwik (76679) later DFC - 305 Sqn
    Kula Kazimierz (76652) - 300 Sqn 04.07.41
    Makowski Wacław (76688) - later DFC - 300 SQn
    Ostowicz Antoni (76705) - 145 Sqn 11.08.40

There is a Edward Roman Pilch (P-1295) who served with 302 Sqn during the BoB, but he's got a PAF service number. Not sure it's him. (20.02.41).

For the other ones, nothing even close. I suspect Kaluga and Kaluza being the same man in your list.

I think that Antonow and Vicz are in fact one person - S/Ldr Jerzy Antonowicz (76642) OC of 307 Sqn - https://listakrzystka.pl/en/antonowicz-jerzy/
Also F/Lt Scynar and Stanislaw Cwynar may be the same man.

    Gents,

From same pilot's diary, under 15 Aug 40 (adds one new Polish name who had served at Penrhos):

    Thursday 15th
"Work during day. Pankratz & Ostowicz (Penrhos) have been killed. Two fine Polish gentlemen. Hard luck. In fighters. . . ."

[Antoni Ostowicz – killed air ops, 11 Aug 40; Wilhelm Pankratz – killed air ops next day: both Hurricane pilots with 145 Squadron]

    Cheers,
    Errol

I suppose that you already know, that Ostowicz is considered the very first Polish Few, being the first in combat, scoring the first kill, and being the first to be killed. Pankratz was also lost in a dramatic circumstances.
