    From ancestry.co.uk:

Born August 13th 1907, Cookham Dean, Berkshire. He's on the 1939 Register living at Rose Farm House, Mapledurham, Oxon, and working as a Chauffeur - Butler. His employers seem to be two ladies named Travers, one born 1873 and the other (her daughter?) born 1895, who have 'Private Means.' Also living there is his wife, Teresa E. Newell, employed as a cook.

His entry on the National Probate Calendar gives the same address, and names his beneficiary as Teresa Elizabeth Newell, his widow (m. 1929, Kensington).

There might be more to this than meets the eye. I note (a) that there is a 'Newell Lane' leading to/from the large house (now a special school) where he was a chauffeur, and (b) the widow re-married only a year or so after his death!

    Peter

With regards to the widow, the 1939 Register has an amendment overwritten her surname with Newell lined through and 'NEWBOLD' added at some time afterwards. Her D.o.B. is given as December 14th 1906.

I see there is a Teresa E. Newbold, b. December 14th 1906, whose death was registered in December 1992 in Cleveland (the UK one, not the U.S.A. one). Her second husband was Bertram Newbold, marriage regd. April 1945 in North Bucks. He was born in 1901 at Wolverton, Bucks, and his death was also registered in Cleveland in December 1992.

I'm wondering if Bert was also in the RAF - his name is on a passenger manifest dated December 7th 1943 arriving in Key West, Florida. It has "Co RAF FP-532" - possibly a Catalina serial...? There is a Bertram Newbold, 1180993 in Air 78...

Interestingly he's also on a passenger list from 1930 arriving in Southampton on the White Star liner Olympic (very nice!), and he's recorded as being a Valet, address 85 Church Street, Wolverton. On the 1939 Register he's recorded as being Butler for the Ram family who lived at Berkhamsted Place, Berkhampstead.

    Apologies for the 'thread drift'...!
