    Default Only S.A.A.F. V.C.

    hello Alain,

He was the only member of the South African Air Force to receive the Victoria Cross in WW2. This was posthumous and should be documented on the web. By the way he lost his life in the crash of his Lancaster in February 1945 south of Valenciennes, but was buried in Belgium.

I think we are dealing with two different men here. The South African was Major Edwin Swales of 582 Squadron and was awarded a DFC as well as the VC but no DSO or DFM.

    Default you're right David

Too fast on that one. I should have noted the different rank, as Edwin SWALES was a major in 1945, so couldn't have been a Wing Commander in 1944.

    Sorry
