Default RAF Maidstone = RAF West Malling?

    Hi all,

I would like to ask if RAF Maidstone = RAF West Malling? If yes then which name in which period was used?

    TIA

I would think RAF West Malling, but you may need to consider RAF Detling as that was in the Maidstone area too.

Thank you Pete, I think that this site http://www.ukairfieldguide.net/airfi...e-flying-sites confirms my question but I will be happy to hear also other confirmations.

The two are probably the same Pavel. The history is summarised at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_West_Malling. There's an element of ambiguity in the account and lack of exact timing, but the original WW1 landing field, known as Kings Hill (Kingshill), became Maidstone Airport in 1932. It was later became RAF West Malling in 1940 (http://www.rafweb.org/Stations/Stati...West%20Malling). See also http://www.kingshillparish.gov.uk/Hi...ill_21787.aspx although this doesn't make a reference to Maidstone Airport - as I've written, there is some ambiguity about the airfield's history.

Brian thank you very much. Well as my reference is from Aug-Sep 40 I suppose it can be still referenced as Maidstone instead of West Malling as the new name was not fully settled yet.
