    Hello Dean

    Welcome to the Forum.

Could be a mis-spelling perhaps, not unheard of on local memorials. Where in the country is the memorial?

    Regards

    Hi Simon

yes I agree , but its a small tablet , one of many , on a memorial wall around a the main Great war memorial in Sittingbourne , the plaques have been arranged in service order , ie Army , Royal NAVY , RAF .

I am basically trying to resolve the 'mystery' names etc on memorials around the Sittingbourne area , the reason is to hopefully provide more background information ie Family etc .

As far as can tell he is not listed as RAF , so that might be the mistake , he is not on the cwgc site either .

If you search on the CWGC website using Sittingbourne as a keyword, and amongst the results are these two:

    1389783 FORGHAM Geoffrey Thomas R.A.F.V.R.: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/c...offrey-thomas/

6284597 FOSBRAEY John Edward, The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regt): https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/c...,-john-edward/

I'm guessing the second one could be your man, at a stretch? Quite a big mis-spelling though...! Are either of them recorded elsewhere on the plaques?

    Regards

Just a thought - does the memorial just list those lost, or those who served too?

There was a James Fosbraey, b. 1922 at Sittingbourne, who was in the Army and R.A.F. during the war.

Its not a particularly UK surname based on a quick search on ancestry.com

What other names are on the memorial and what other mysteries are there?

Where is the memorial, Im surebthere is a photo online.

Is there any chance they might be someone not born in the UK and maybe in French forces, odd though that might be.

    Ill search more later.

No Forgays on 1939 register as far as a quick search shows

    Hello,

Re: FORGAY, go to: https://hrgs.co.uk/ww2database/ see: pp.951 to 960 of 1,168. Don't use the search function on the page, it only gives you the specific entry - you can't see the surrounding entries. Had a look at the WW1 entries (Sittingbourne), no matching surname - check under "PROJECTS"/"RESOURCES".
