Default 33095 Squadron Leader Arthur 'Scruffs' Sanders DFC - 264 Squadron

Can anyone advise me which unit Squadron Leader Arthur Sanders served on prior to joining 264 Squadron please, and if his award of the DFC was relative to his service pre 264.

    Regards

    Andy

    Hello,

SANDERS, Arthur Thomas Drake. S/L. (33095) RAF - 264 Sqn.
    London Gazette:6/6/1941:p.3227.

This officer has taken part in many operational missions against the enemy. On one occasion he carried out a very fine reconnaissance of Wilhelmshaven in the face of intense anti-aircraft opposition and under appalling weather conditions. As a squadron commander he has proved himself to be a fine leader and a determined pilot who has contributed in a large measure to the many successes obtained by his squadron. He has recently destroyed two enemy aircraft at night.

    p.1467.

    and ...

    No.107 Squadron. WATTISHAM - 25 November, 1939.

All aircraft took off within one hour and carried out a successful reconnaissance under adverse conditions which, however, prevented the taking of successful photographs. All aircraft returned safely although they were subjected to heavy A.A. from the objectives. The reconnaissance proved that no units of the German fleet were in harbour at Heligoland, Wilhelmshaven or Cuxhaven, although a certain number of destroyers were located. The leader of the flight was Wing Commander B. E. EMBRY, the other pilots were Squadron Leader A. T. D. SANDERS, Flight Lieutenant H. F. THOMSON and Pilot Officer J. W. STEPHENS.

    Hi Col,

Thank you for your input, it's very much appreciated. I'll pass the details onto his family.
