Sgt Heubner was on his first operation with 78 Squadron when he was shot down by a night-fighter flown by Werner Baake of 3 NJG1 at a height of 3200m.

Is there anything else you are interested in?

    Hi Adrian,

Just to add to Daz’s reply, this was Werner Baake’s 22nd victory, and second for the night, he would survive the war with a total of 40 victories.

    Regards,

    John.

Does anybody know the story of why a USAAF Sgt Pilot was flying operationally with RAF BC ?
I am aware that the USAAF did have some sgt pilots, but by the time they flew on operational Aircraft they were usually (but not always) given the rank of (at least) Flight Officer (after late 1941).
I am always intrigued by anomolies and I know there were many of them in wartime.

So does anybody have any details about Sgt Heubner please ?

As suspected - looks like Heubner had crossed the border to join the RCAF and then (in the process of ?) transferring to USAAF.(if this internet entry is accurate of course)

Heubner William H 10601520 Joined RCAF, then 8th USAF

Perhaps Heubner is a slight typo on his surname ??

    W. Huebner was in the RCAF first as R-137371 and discharged on November 2,1943. He enlisted in the US Army air force on November 3,1943. He was supposed to complete a tour first with the RCAF/RAF Squadron before he would fly with the US Army air force. Hope this helps.
