Default F/L Francis James Harold Bacon 72602 - Possible RNAS Service

This chap is very interesting. I know that he was granted a commission, on probation, as a P/O in the RAF's Administrative and Special Duties Branch, on 28/02/1939. I also know that he later served as the adjutant to No.1660 CU, No.1485 B&GF and No.1690 B(D)TF. But is he the same chap who flew Maurice Farman, Avro, BE2e, Bristol Scout, Short Seaplane and Hamble Baby aircraft with the RNAS. It seems highly likely, but I can't prove it. Can anyone on here help me please? Thanks in advance and hope, Andrew

    Hi Andrew,

Certainly not proof, but in Air Britain Royal Navy serials 1911-1919 there is reference to..

    FSL F J H Bacon

Fairy Hamble Baby Tractor Biplane N1451 crashed on landing , completely wrecked. Bacon slightly injured.

    Seems possible..............

Thanks Guys. I have the National Archive which Mojmir referred to, and it supports the information which Peter has quoted, but I just can't PROVE that he's the same chap! There must be a link out there somewhere...... Please keep trying guys......! Thanks again, Andrew

That’s got to be enough proof how
Many people with same 3 initials and surname?

Also the national archive link nails it!

Thanks again every, I think I'm going to have to accept that, while I can't find a 'smoking gun', there is enough substantial evidence. After all, 'Andrew Clark' is a pretty common name, but I also have two middle names and I have never met, or found on the internet, anyone with the same full name, so the chances of this being the same guy are extremely high. Interestingly, the AIR 76/16/62 2808 reference lists the same movements as ADM 273/18/78 5107 BACON, but says that he flew the aircraft while serving with the RFC, not the RNAS. Fascinating stuff, and thanks again to all.

Hi Andrew - this does not really help but out of general interest,an excerpt from 'Flight Magazine' 13/9/1917,the earliest mention we have seen whilst looking online. His appointment to be Probationary Flight Officer with the RNAS.

'Flight Magazine' excerpt is from archive.org
