Default Post Op Air Bomber report or form? Was there such a thing?

    Hello,

I’ve seen the combat reports that Air Gunners completed after an engagement with an enemy fighter and was wondering if Air Bombers had a similar form.

Did Air Bombers complete a separate form upon return to base after each Op? If so, are those forms available?

Hi Mike, from my experience there were standard forms where there were noted information from debriefings of bomber crews - not only from Air Bomber but also from other crew members. There were recorded not only results but also enemy activity (fighters, S/Ls, flak) and other sightings (another bomber shot down, decoy targets, etc.)

Unfortunately I have no knowledge if they have survived in TNA or elsewhere. I would suppose there is very little chance they survived. I have seen them only for 311 Sq in Czech Military Archive at Prague.

6-Group ORB's have monthly summaries that discuss and review the various sections/trades in the aircrew. I found this mention regarding the records of "Air Bombers", February, 1945.

    Jim,

That is a very interesting document indeed! My Dad flew with 77 Sqn, 4 Group, any idea if 4 Group had a similar document?

Mike: I don’t know. All of 6-Group’s ORB material is online. I’m not sure if the 4-Group’s material is up there and in what form. I suspect there must be something available. I suspect any detailed discussion would be in the appendices. There are all sorts of “crunchy little nuggets” of information in the 6-Group ORBs. Also at the Base level as well.

I should also add that Wakelam’s book on the “Science of Bombing“ is a useful read on how bomb aiming developed during the course of the war.
