Default S/L Donald McIlveen (RAF) KIA 1944?

    Hi all,

Am trying to establish the identity, service number, postings and any details of this possible Australian in the RAF Ė Donald McIlveen
    https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/115481401

Canít seem to find any matches on CWGC, no comparable enlistments through RAAF Nominal Rolls or RAF via London Gazette. I have also checked PoW listings.

Maybe I am not looking in the right places?! There is always a chance the article contains incorrect details or the surname has an alternate spelling? Any help appreciated.

According to other newpaper articles his father was Scottish born James McIlveen who moved to Australia around 1906. It seems likely Donald could have been born in Australia or very young at the time of settlement.

    Thanks.

    Regards, Drew

    Drew

If there are any spelling errors, they were repeated on this notice from December 6th 1944:

Thanks for your reply Simon. Yes, I have searched through the Trove site and any listings for his father include the McIlveen spelling. Whether the surname was listed incorrectly on enlistment or he joined under another name could be possibilities.

The article also mentions Donald flew with Kingsford Smith Airways and worked as a draughtsman - Google doesnít seem to offer any additional information to these leads.

    A bit of a mystery!

    Regards, Drew

Thanks so much Mojmir! Appears to be the right McIlveen and the full name is a huge help and now it seems he may have had brothers in the RAF according to that family pic.

Just did a quick bit of googling and canít seem to find much else in terms of Donaldís RAF number, wartime service or even a death record. Those pics via the ancestry public searches are great but unfortunately I am not a member so canít access further information. Curiously there was a Canadian with similar initials - J.D McIlveen who became a PoW around Nov 44, although his name was James Davey. Will keep digging and hopefully some more information will come to light.

    regards, Drew

An interesting comparison, thanks for taking the time to check - they certainly look like the same airman. Unfortunately a match would probably suggest it is not the same Donald McIlveen from the Australian newspaper article. I am happy to be proven wrong! The RCAF William Donald McIlveen obviously survived the war and apparently did not make Squadron leader either.

    regards, Drew
