Default Peter Cleve BOON 1311816 / 196461 Mustang Pilot

    Hi All

I'm now trying to chase this No.1690 B(D)TF chap. I can find little about his career before he joined No.65 Squadron on 7th February 1944 as, unfortunately, the ORB does not state where he arrived from. I do know that he was shot down near on 27/06/1944, while flying on armed reconnaissance sortie with No.65 Squadron over Dreux in Northern France. He was then taken to Front-Stalag 221 (aka Rennes Military Hospital) and was, presumably, released when that establishment was liberated in early August 1944. I can't find anything about him again, except that he was awarded the DFM at some point, until he is recorded as having been re-posted to No.1690 B(D)TF, on commissioning w.e.f. 02/04/1945. He survived the war and served as a F/Lt in the RAF until, I believe, the late 1950's.

As always, I will greatly appreciate any advice or help offered.

Cheers, Andrew
Andrew,

Unless the LG made a mistake this man was on No. 170 Squadron when he was awarded the DFM (gazetted 11 August 1944)

There's a fellow on WW2Talk "Sirjahn" who has been researching 221 for years. He may be of help.

    Regards,

    Dave

Thank you Dave. You are correct and I really don't know how I missed that one! Much appreciated. You're also right about "Sirjahn", on on WW2Talk. We've been able to exchange information on P.C. Boon, which has helped us both. Thanks again, Andrew

Sgt, then F/Sgt P C Boon was with No.170 Squadron on Mustang Mk.I and Mk.IA aircraft from October 1942 until 170 was disbanded end of December 1943. Flew a large number of operational sorties with them, particularly second half of 1943 which included a large number of 'Popular' sorties covering beaches and defences along French coastline and sorties against suspected NOBALL sites. Aircrew were largely posted to other Tac/R Mustang Squadrons to build up pilot numbers before D-Day, a few posted to training and staff roles 'on rest', but a few were posted to Squadrons re-equipping with the Mustang Mk.III, most likely to bring some operational experience with the Mustang to those squadrons.
