Default Gp Capt Shannon 77 Squadron

A contact of mine has told me of an entry in his father's logbook from his time in 77 Squadron. This records him flying as an air gunner on an operation on 15 March 1945 where the pilot was a Group Captain Shannon. This was obviously not the well known David John Shannon DSO DFC RAAF, as by then he had been taken off operational flying. Any ideas as to who it might have been?

There’s an Acting Squadron Leader Hugo SHANNON (83254), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 236 Squadron picking up a DFC on 14 Dec 1943 [LG]

    Chas,

77 Squadron contributed 11 Halifaxes to this daylight operation, the target being Mathias Stinnes, None of the aircraft were piloted by G/C Shannon, in fact his name does not appear in the crew manifests at all. The highest ranking officer was a W/C Forbes. (https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ils/r/D8454172).

Brian -- thanks for this. Bit of a mystery as according to his son, Holmes's logbook records Shannon as the pilot. I'm going to send all this information on to him so maybe he will clarify it. It won't be the first time that an individual logbook entry differs from that in an ORB.

Could be that his rank meant he was discouraged or perhaps banned from participating in operational flights so his name made it into a logbook but not the ORB. Have a similarly documented Coastal Command example of this.

So far as I can see Holmes was a fixture of Forbes' crew during the month.

Another thought: Shannon may have been considered in command because of his rank but not the hands-on pilot.

He wasn't included in the manifest, Robert. A standard crew numbered 7 men, any additional 'passenger' (very rare) was named.
