An American aircraft reported as a “Vengeance” crash landed in the funnel of the main runway at RAF East Kirkby on Sunday 1st April, its USAAF crew members walked away unhurt. Please can anybody ID the aircraft, unit and crew ?

    PeteS, Hi,
This would be Sunday 1 April 1945? Low nr Iceland and a series of fronts crossing UK in a stiffish SW’ly wind. Good vis. (Note that the DWR has dropped its classification from SECRET to CONFIDENTIAL!). So he would have been landing down E Kirkby QDM 263 (in 1944)? The “Main Runway” at E Kirkby in 1945 was QDM 200? Don’t know which r/w he was calling “Short Finals” for when his donk stopped?
Local Police records might have something?
