Can I ask whether the cloakroom/lockers are open/in use?
Once you are in can you move around normally eg go out to the car and return?

Steve according to the TNA website the answer is yes for both of your questions.

    https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/...avirus-update/

Will I be able to use the lockers?

A limited number of our ground floor lockers will be available for visitors to use, to ensure sufficient distancing in the locker area. These lockers will be thoroughly cleaned at the end of each day. We’ll also be carefully managing how visitors and staff move in and out of this area, so please try to minimise your return visits to your locker as much as possible.

Can I leave during the day and return later?

Yes, you will be allowed to leave the building/site to get refreshments, although this will obviously reduce your research time. We’d encourage visitors to bring their own refreshments, where possible.

    PNK

I believe you can order with an out of date card and renew it when you are there.

Correct the locker room is open, though I didn't use it and it was okay to come and go.

Hi all there is recently update of the info on the TNA website:

We’re very pleased to be able to welcome visitors back into our reading rooms, offering a limited service to visitors who need access to our collection of original documents for their research. Following regular reviews since our initial re-opening in July, we are now able to expand our services and increase our capacity, so that we can accommodate more visitors and give them greater access to our collections.

From Tuesday 25 August we will be opening up our second floor map and large document reading room, as well as increasing the number of seats available in our first floor document reading room. Visitors will also be able to order more documents each day (nine instead of six), and we will have a small number of two-day appointments available for visitors wishing to research bulk document orders (between 20 and 40).

All visitors are still required to book their visit and order their documents in advance.

    FOR INFORMATION

I sent this enquiry to TNA:

With the ongoing limitations relating to access to the archives, along with the file number restrictions which are quite rightly in place, it has become extremely difficult to obtain smaller files such as POW Liberation Questionnaires which are key to my research. Obviously, the "commercial copiers" and those that are attending the archives for their own research, aim to obtain the larger files and don't want to add the smaller files to their listing; unfortunately, I don't think this situation will change in the foreseeable future.

My question therefore is "are there any plans to digitise the smaller files so that they can be downloaded using your online system (free download or paid for download) and, if so, when might this be?"

    Their response was as follows:

Thank you for contacting The National Archives of the United Kingdom.

Unfortunately, there are currently no plans to digitise the records to which you refer. You may have seen that we have announced an expansion of our service on-site.

Readers will be able to book their visit and order their documents in advance, and hopefully this might help to provide you with greater access to the files which you are interested in.

    Main areas of research:

    - CA Butler and the loss of Lancaster ME334 (http://rafww2butler.wordpress.com/ )
    - Aircrew Training (Basic / Trade / Operational / Continuation / Conversion)
    - The History of No. 35 Squadron (1916 - 1982) (https://35squadron.wordpress.com/)

[Always looking for copies of original documents / photographs etc relating to these subjects]

Pete thank you for posting this as I have the same problem. So in short - they do not bother with our problems:-(
The situation will be the same when the TNA will returned to the normal with the "new ordering scheme" which is also limiting for the commercial copiers and long distance visitors.
