Default Serial number and crew of Stirling F / 214 Sqn on the night 27/28 Sep 1943

    Hi,

On this night the rear gunner of Stirling F from 214 Sqn made a claim for a destroyed FW.190 but I have not been able to identify the crew or the serial number of the aircraft.

The Montly Supplementary Narrative of Operations – 9/43 (AIR 14/3433) has the following info:

    Night 27/28 September
3 Group. A/C Stirling ‘F’ of 214 Squadron S. of HANOVER at 2221 hrs. height 17,000 ft. was approached by a FW.190. The R/G fired a long burst and the E/A burst into flames. The FW.190 is claimed as destroyed.

I have not found any combat report (I checked both AIR 50 and the squadron ORB Appendices). The Squadron ORB do not mention any combat and code letters are not included in the ORB.

Is there any possibility to identify the aircraft via the ORB’s from No 3 Group or the station (Chedburgh)?

    Thanks in advance
    Peter

    Hi Peter,

Theo Boiten's Nachtjagd Archive 1943 part 3 says 214 Sqn EE956 shot down an Fw 190 at 2321. Probably one of five lost by JG300. Theo's books use local time I believe.
MJF Bowyers "Stirling" lists EE956 delivered to 214 on 12.8.43 but as "J" at the time. He also lists it as damaged that night. Air Britain Stirling file also lists it as "J".
    best wishes Peter

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for the reply. The 214 Sqn ORB mentions that EE956 was damaged by a Ju 88 but not the combat with the FW 190. It seems that combats are only mentioned when the bomber is damaged during this period. The “J” makes me uncertain but it may be wrong in the Monthly Supplementary Narrative of Operations (I have seen this several times).

    Best regards,
    Peter

    Hi Peter

The ORB says 214 sent out 4 Stirlings on a Gardening op that night, while 7 were detailed to attack Hannover.

Of those 7, one was withdrawn prior, one returned early, one failed to return (Sgt Brown in 'E'), and four attacked Hannover and returned ok. My notes and analysis give me a/c 'C', 'J', 'O' and 'Z' as the four that attacked and returned.

The closest I have for a 'BU-F' is EH959 (ops from 30/8/1943 to 30/11/1943) but it wasn't on this Hannover op. However it did go to Hannover on 22-23/9/1943.

ps Interestingly, it looks like F/O (then F/L) F Henderson flew EH959 on 7 ops between 30/8/1943 and 22/11/1943. The exception within that series seems to be on the night of 27-28/9 when he flew EF406 ('BU-A') on one of the four Gardening sorties. Maybe his 'regular' EH959 was out of service that night?...

    Hi Ian,

Thanks, with your information I am sure the “F” in the Monthly Supplementary Narrative of Operations was incorrect.

There is a combat report for the night 8/9 October for Stirling EF498 with the letter ‘J’ (actually the same crew as on EE956 on the night 27/28 Sep 1943 with F/Sgt J. Sellar as Captain). Is it possible for you to confirm the letter for EF498?

    Best regards,
    Peter

    Hi Peter

I've got EF498 as 'J' too. (Mind you, I also got a lot of the code/serial tie-ups from things like Bowyer's 'Stirling' book so I'm always happy to be corrected by better evidence!)

It's the only ORB entry for EF498 with 214 Sqn. The previous 'J' was EE956 until it was damaged by a Ju 88 on 27/9/1943.

EF498 was also shot up by a nightfighter on its op on 8/10/1943.

The next 'J' was EF445 from 18/11 until that was lost on 22/11.

    Quite a turnover of a/c!

    Thanks for the confirmation.
