Default Vincent Henry Twomey - PoW

    Hello All,
Can anybody tell me when Vincent Henry Twomey (1132421/158586) became PoW? I think it must have been after his Commissioning, but I haven’t yet got down to his loss in the AIR 81 files. His Sqn/aircraft/operation would be a bonus!
    TIA

    Hello,

    F/Lt V. H. Twomey was a member of No.73 Sqn RAF:

1/. 06/06/1944 - Four sweeps on an eventful day led to some aircraft damage, with Flt Lt Twomey bailing out of (Spitfire) (JK454). He was seen to land safely and to be making his way towards the Partisans (and it was learned later that he was safe with them).

    2/. Spitfires used by 73 (Squadron) - JK454 - 73 - 31-5-44 engine cut, w/o. Flt lt Twomey b/o. Knin, Jugo 6-6-44.

3/. TWOMEY, VH Flt Lt NZ 19-4-44 from 249 (Sqn), b/o Yugo 6-6-44 PoW.

    See:
    The History of 73 Squadron RAF - Part 3 of 3 - September 1943 to March 1969.

    Col,
Very many thanks for that. Much appreciated.
In spite of yr point 1., he seems to have ended up "in the bag"! He appears on the PoW List but with no Camp/PoW numbers! Possible that as he was seen to be OK, and leaving the 'landing' unscathed, it was assumed(!!!) he had become PoW? Only later INT gave him as being with the Partisans.
So should he be deleted from the PoW manifest?
    Tks again

158586 F/Lt Vincent H. J Twomey captured 6/6/1944 in 267 Stalag Luft lll (East). (Allied Prisoners of War 1939-45 on Ancestry). He is listed as F/Lt and A/F/Lt on slightly different registers.
Stalag Luft III was a Luftwaffe-run prisoner of war camp during the Second World War, which held captured Western Allied air force personnel. The camp was established in March 1942 in the German province of Lower Silesia near the town of Sagan, 160 kilometres south-east of Berlin

    * TNA AIR 78/161/3 Image 131 C1R1 only gives two Forenames – no “J”
** His Commissioning only gives two Forenames – no “J”.
*** He would, therefore and most likely, have been A/Flt Lt on 6 Jun 44?
The AIR 81 report of his having met up with the Partisans should be treated with some caution? – unless both he and they were subsequently apprehended by the Wehrmacht?.
His subsequent Air Force career (as best as I can find!) is a bit of a ‘dog’s breakfast’. Too difficult!

This is the entry from Allied POWs Definitely a J

    Name:
    Vincent H. J. Twomey

    Nationality:
    British

    Rank:
    F/Lt.

    Military Date:
    6 Jun 1944

    Service Number:
    158586

    Source Description:
269: Milag-Marlag Nord-Oflag L (Ex Stalag Luft III): Forced Evacuation and Finance Reports

    But another entry gives
    V . H. Twomey

WW2 POW details are very sparse compared to WW1 ICRC have amazing stuff with the actual German records and files.
