    Default DFC Citation help

Could anyone please give me some info on the award of the DFC to Kenneth John Bettles?

Sorry but I do not have the year nor his rank. Any help gratefully received.

Both the Flight archives and the London Gazette list his DFC in January 1945

    Air Ministry, 16th January, 1945.
The KING has been graciously pleased to approve
    the following awards: —
    Flight Lieutenants.

    Kenneth John BETTLES (133994), R.A.F.V.R., 214 Sqn.

Gazette Issue 36894 published on the 12 January 1945. Page 1 of 4
    Flight, FEBRUARY 15TH, 1945

Theres no citation is either publication however.

    Default DFC to Bettles

While no citation was published in either the London Gazette or Air Ministry Bulletins, the recommendation (often more detailed than any formal citation) will most likely be found at Kew in either AIR 2/9029 or AIR 2/9039.

Hugh, many thanks for those usful ref. numbers.

Is there, by any chance, someone going to Kew who could have a look for me? I can't get there until next May at the earliest.

    Hi Bob

Don't think I can help you at the moment as I'm not due to go up to Kew in the near future even though it's not too far from where I live, but could I ask your interest in Bettles?

I just ask as I have made notes on all of 214's wartime ops so I'm always on the lookout for new bits of info. I think he flew 11 ops on Fortresses with 214 between 7/7 and 17/9/1944, including a couple of 'Big Ben' trips (trying to pick up any V2 control signals). But I don't think I have notes on where he came to 214 from, nor where he went to afterwards.

    Regards

    Ian

Ian, I have been asked by a relative of Bettles to find out what I can.
Bettles was with 161 Sqdn (my area of interest)for a short time in March 44. He is shown in the ORB as being transferd to 149 Sqdn 11.3.44.
I'll drop you a line off board.
