An update on the Arthur Smith story....the death certificate has arrived today and......has led to more questions than answers!

Cause of death "Multiple Injuries caused by being knocked down by the locomotive of an LMS passenger train."
Place of death is given as "near Burnside Crossings, Millom without Millom.

An Inquest was held on 7 June 1941 and an Open verdict given.

I've still not had any luck locating an inquest report (although am pursuing the local Coroner's Office lead Andrew!).

Would, of course, be very grateful for your thoughts guys.

Deepest sympathy is extended to Mrs. Smith on the sudden death of her husband, Mr. Arthur Smith, L.A.C., R.A.F., who passed away suddenly on Friday in Cumberland.

Looking at my Inquest Handbook (published London, England) regarding an 'Open Verdict' it says This means that there is not enough evidence to return any other verdict.

    Thanks Mark

I had a reply from the coroner who very kindly checked the records and has confirmed that no documents regarding the inquest are extant, so although we know the verdict, we do not know, and are now unlikely to know, the circumstances surrounding the event....

    Thanks everyone for your help
