Hello I'm trying to find out anything on a Hudson VI T/EW. 897. of 48 Squadron which was lost flying out of Gibraltar 20/21 January 1944. The Ops Record Book (AIR 27) states "This aircraft failed to return and sent no signals. A.S.R. action commenced at dawn on 21 January". I have been informed that it crashed in the sea West of the Straits of Gibraltar.
I have the medal group to Sergeant Ian Brownlie Stavert and would welcome any further info on the loss of this plane please.
Ancestry.com has the files of the two Canadians on board. They do not contain any further details of the loss itself.
The body of Pilot Officer Roy Hawley Garnham J86224 RCAF was recovered on the 28th January 1944 on Fedhala Beach about 20 miles NE of Casablance, Morocco. The three remaining crewmen were not recovered.
The aircraft simply failed to return from its sortie with no explanation.
