You are going to have to go through the ORBs of the Lancaster PFF squadrons and use a process of elimination. 'Bomber Command Diaries' book does not list the squadrons at each raid, so only the ORBs. I looked in the 7 Sqn ORBs which I have, and the squadron was on the Russelheim raid on the 12th but not as Master Bomber. You need to browse, 7 Sqn (done), 35, 83,97.156,405,582,635. Should easy as the ORBs are visible online.

I have had a quick check of 35 Squadron, but couldn't find them acting as MB on these raids, although they were for the Falaise operation on 14th August (is 12th August date correct)

I have just found the 4408 ORB for 635 Squadron in my archives, and:

    1. F Smith is shown as "MB Duties" on 11th August Lens operation.
    2. WT Brooks is shown as "MB Duties" on 14th August Falaise Operation (see my note above re 35 Squadron ORB for this date)

Have sent extracts from ORBs via Messenger

    Regards

Steve. You can rule out 405 Squadron on all of those targets.

The 582 Sqn ORB indicates that W/C Cribb (DSO DFC) was the M/B for the Russelsheim raid on 12/13 Aug 44.

From the same ORB it appears that Flt Lt G. W. O'Dononvan (DSO DFC) was the M/B for the St. Trond attack on 15 Aug 44.

It's not clear who the DMBs were.

Steve: As Cyflyer said, you have to go through the PFF Lancaster Squadron ORBs and look at the entries. You need to read the entire entry as some squadrons donít identify assignments. Also, not all raids had a Master Bomber assigned for the raid. Other raids had several, so be aware of that possibility. I found this process sometimes infuriating. Individuals on this forum have been helpful. Preparing a PFF database of MBs for operations would be a useful endeavour for an enthusiastic researcher and would be much appreciated by all!

    Hi Jim,

I have the PFF ORB's but like you say they can be rather difficult to understand. I am aware that certain targets had various AP's and H-Hours which may have a specific Master Bomber, hence my recording the squadron's allotted ToT.

Each of the op's I mention the 218 ORB records a Master Bomber giving instructions.

    Thanks for your input.
