Many thanks, this has confirmed my suspicions that he left 78 Squadron and was sadly killed with 138 Squadron. He had been in and out of 78 Squadron a number of times, with spells at 19 O.T.U. and 76 Squadron but is finally moved to 138 Squadron. Returning in bad weather, following a leaflet dropping operation to St Etienne he finds RAF Tangmere fog bound and diverts to RAF Boscombe Down but this too is fog bound and it would appear that whilst completing a turn at low level in the fog the aircraft crashes and all bar one of the crew are killed.

As always you help is much appreciated.

You Sir, are a star, what a great find "the memoryproject" is. I have now identified that Hare's BEM was for his actions when the Anson he was flying in crashed into the sea and he swam to recover a life raft.
    Thanks so much
