Default Air gunners of Vickers Warwick BV368/L, 280 Sqn 8 Oct 44

    Hi,

Having just read the article Salvation over the waves Luftwaffe air-sea rescue by Chris Goss in the latest Fly Past I am trying to find the names of the air gunners that manned the rear and mid upper turret of Vickers Warwick BV368/L on the 8th October 1944. This aircraft was attacked by two Me 410s. The rear and mid upper turret gunners opened fire on one of the attackers which broke away with port engine smoking. The other Me 410 shot down the Warwick and injured the rear gunner. The Warwick ditched and all crew got aboard. The navigator with a dislocated shoulder.

I am not sure which positions the crew had. The crew is listed in the ORB in the following order:

F/O Chesher George Henry (169084) RAFVR - PILOT
    F/S Jones B.
    P/O Williams H (NZ416693) WOP/AG
    W/O Donley A.
    F/S Gregory A.
    W/O Edwards E.

Did the air gunners of the air-sea rescue squadrons have fixed positions or did they change positions like they did in the GR squadrons?

The pilot George Chesher received a DFC after this operation.

    Regards
    Peter

    Hello,

A/Comm Graham Pitchfork covered this story in the following book:

Shot Down And In The Drink - RAF and Commonwealth aircrews saved from the sea 1939-1945.
Air Comm Pitchfork, Graham MBE, BA, FRAES.
    Kew:The National Archives,2005.
    pp.75-7 & 170. (also check later editions).

    Pitchfork names:

W/O A Donley as an Air Gunner - badly wounded in attack.
F/Sgt B Jones as Navigator - dislocated shoulder during ditching.

There is also a photo of Chesher and his crew about to be picked up by RML 27 (IWM Photo C 4692).

    Also mentioned here:

    Hi Col,

Thanks for the reply much appreciated.

I found some info about the crew of Warwick BV290 which was lost on the same date on http://aircrewremembered.com/mason-albert.html. The crew positions were Pilot, 2nd Pilot, Nav, WOP/AG, AG and AG. Leaving the positions as 2nd Pilot and AG (mid upper turret) to Gregory and Edwards. I have tried to find some more info about these two in Form 541 but so far without luck.

    Cheers,
    Peter
