In the operational reports submitted by this squadron in 1942, reference was made to “SI working well”, or “no interference on SI”. What did that abbreviation stand for?

I can but grasp at straws on this one, and suggest that it may be a badly written (and you are about to tell me that the narrative is typed!) version of "S.E." (for Search Equipment, that is, Radar. This is even before I know what type of aircraft the squadron was equipped with, or its role!

Thank you for replying. Yes, it was from a typed Ops Report! This “S.I.” was, it seemed, radio/radar equipment fitted to Wellington aircraft of 221 Sqn for anti submarine operations in the eastern Med. I have “adjusted” your thoughts to Search or Searching Instrument. On several of the post op. reports, comment was made of “no interference on S.I”, or “S.I. worked well”
