Default Help to identify the 78 Sqn crews which made claims in May-June 44

    Hi,

The Monthly Supplementary Narrative of Operations for the months May and June 1944 has 10 claims made by No.78 Sqn against Luftwaffe night fighters. I have not found any combat reports from this period which makes it difficult to identify the aircraft and crews as the squadron has no information about the claims even though some combats are mentioned. In the Monthly Supplementary Narrative of Operations the aircraft are only identified by the code letter but the ORB just have the serial number and no co letters.

    Night 1/2nd May
    Halifax “P” – FW.190 claimed as destroyed
    Halifax “S” – ME.210 claimed as destroyed

    Night 2nd/3rd June
Halifax “A” – ME.110 claimed as probably destroyed and JU.88 damaged
    Halifax “Q” – T/E E/A claimed as destroyed

    Night 7th/8th June
Halifax “U” – ME.410 claimed as probably destroyed
    Halifax “V” – ME.110 claimed as damaged

    Night 12/13th June
    Halifax “Z” – JU.88 claimed as destroyed

    Night 22/23rd June
    Halifax “R” – T/E E/A claimed as destroyed
    Halifax “W” – ME.410 claimed as destroyed

    Thanks in advance
    Peter

    Great, thanks Daz,

Actually I am trying to identify air gunners and pilots for all claims made by Bomber Command during WW2. 78 Sqn were one of the squadrons were I had most gaps but you fixed this.

    John,

Thanks for the offer but I have the information I need for 158 Sqn for 1943. 158 Sqn Association was a good source for information about the crews.

    Peter,

No worries, I’m the Assistant Archivist for 158 Sqn, my uncle was one of the gunners on that Op.

    Cheers,

    John.

As this crew was lost in my research area (in that very Halifax) during the night 14/15 June 1944. I've already been in touch with Daz about them, but if new "material" has emerged, I'll appreciate so I can complete my file about them.

    Thanks in advance

    Joss
