    Default Sgt (Pilot) Helmore 1940

I appreciate that this is a real long shot but nothing ventured nothing gained. I am looking for any information on a Sgt (Pilot) Helmore; I have him flying 3 operations with 78 Squadron in late 1941 and early 1942:

    30/11/41 Hamburg
    18/12/41 Brest
    10/02/42 Emden

I can then find no further information about him. As SNCO aircrew were not recorded in any detail in the Squadron ORB I don't have any idea of when he joined or left the squadron, previous unit, initials or service number. I have searched the CWGC database and have come up blank and I have checked POW records and the London Gazette for any awards for gallantry/meritorious service etc. The only possible connection is a 89350 Squadron Leader P W Helmore RAFVR who is Mentioned in Dispatches in the KBHL 08/06/44, but I have nothing concrete to connect this gentleman to the Sgt pilot who flew with 78 Squadron.

    Any help/thoughts appreciated.

    Thanks

    Daz, Hi,
If nobody comes up with the answer quickly then we can do it the hard way! There are only 30-odd Helmore's in AIR 78/74/9 (and I noted that a few of those were of the female persuasion). Wouldn't take long to transcribe them to a spreadsheet, discard the "non-runners", and you will be left with the full names/inits/numbers of those who might be your Driver, Airframe, EA 1.

Thank you all for your prompt responses. I think we have narrowed the field to the following:

914042 Raymond Decimus Anthony Helmore - enlisted circa Sept 1939

1186430 Norman Martyn Helmore - enlisted circa April 1940

1300105 Thomas Whitehouse Helmore - enlisted circa July 1940 - NOW RULED OUT - he was a Cpl in 1943 so not aircrew

1378060 George Eric Helmore - enlisted circa August 1940

1322888 Derek Eastman Helmore - enlisted circa November 1940

1321366 Terence Martin Helmore - enlisted circa November 1940

    338819 W L Helmore - enlisted circa December 1940

868761 Alfred Edgar Fitzroy Helmore - enlisted circa December 1925

370186 R L Helmore - enlisted circa September 1925 - eliminated see post from Paulmcmillan

So does anyone have any suggestions on how I can weed out the non-runners?

    Regards

    Daz

One way is to feed all the Service Numbers through the LG and CWGC. Any Commissioning will indicate possible non-GD Branch, and CWGC appearance can, again, find 'non-runners'. Putting the known Forenames (or Inits, and Service Number) through any of the genealogical/fam-hist sites will often provide additional data - or 'non-runners'!! But these procedures are very time-consuming and tedious. Age can help whether he's "in" or "out". The Service Number (and an assumption of age on Enlistment!!) can help! But the Service Record might be the only answer - and with 4 "possibles" - this might be expensive. Depends how important the information is!!
