    Hi Alex,

    VICKERY, Kenneth Primrose - Sgt(Pilot) - 566236 - RAF - 263 Sqn.

Took off from Filton to carry out air firing at Sand Bay and a sector patrol. The section leader (P/O Craig-Adams) abandoned the patrol between Portishead and Clevedon due to deteriorating weather of cloud and rain, and issued an order for a right turn to return to base. Yellow 3 (Sgt Whall) followed the turn but Sgt Vickery, on the inside of the formation, missed the turn and reported over R/T that he had lost sight of the others. Approximately 15 minutes later, 74 Battery reported to the Filton Ops Room that an aircraft had fallen into the sea near Portishead and later added that "a civilian had seen three aircraft disappear into a cloud of mist and one appeared out of the mist in a dive and this was subsequently followed by an explosion, after which he saw the other two aircraft come out of the mist."

Subsequent searches of the area by air and sea had no result. Two weeks later, parts from the fuselage were washed ashore near Portishead, but no trace of Sgt Vickery was found.

    From AIR 81/1981
