Default Personal file off RAF personal

    Goodmorning ,

I have few questions , first as a amateur researcher on the airwar over Belgium in WWII i would like to know where and how i can find or ask for the personel file of a RAF airman . Second , would there be a picture op the person in his file , the Canadian and Australian file has normally a picture in it.

Thanks in advance for the help

    Hi Alain,

you will find the guideline for example here:
    https://www.gov.uk/government/collec...ervice-records

Please read carefully the conditions - it is quite easy to request record of those who got killed in WWII but the fee is 30 GBP per record.
The standard RAF Service Record does not contains the photo as those you have mentioned. The record means in general two large sheets of paper for NCO only - four in case of an officer.

Yes those photos has been taken for sure. But the question is if they has survived and if yes are they stored in the service records?
Those records would be definitely more extensive and only this part is provided.

    Hi Alain

The service records originally contained all the relevant documents but in the 1970s the contents of the service records were destroyed to conserve space and only the index cards remain, which is what you get when you apply for the records.

    Alain,
you may find much of what you are looking for has already been found by someone else, say through ancestry or other squadron/crew research.
Post up who you are looking for and the power of rafcommands will swing in to help you, hopefully!

    Hi Alain

Further to my previous message, I've just noticed that the records I am currently working on for someone state that the 'Original Document were destroyed - May 1961'

Archival vandalism of the highest order!! I, however, am old/cynical enough to think that the reason was not 'conserving space' but - more likely - reducing the number of staff required to look after them? The Met Office wartime files for Met Office personnel in uniform suffered (at some stage) the same "administrative procedure"!!
    HTH - but I know it won't!!
