"67518 is in the Block 965000-1149977, RAFVR, issued at Padgate 01-Sep-39 to 31-Mar-41.
Mathematically his number would have been issued very early (practically in the queue waiting for the doors to open!!) "

Pete,

Full name was John Alexander "Jack" Cumming, born Vancouver 9 December 1919; son of Donald and Elizabeth Cumming of Scotland.

Obituary has him joining the RAF 12 September 1939. "After serving in India and Burma he returned to England and became a rear gunner, serving a tour of duty in Lancaster bombers"

So got him 100% now only question mark is correct service number

Thank you Simon, yes I saw him, it's SO very close isn't it, but as the service number can be found twice in F540's many months apart I reckon it is likely to be correct and must assume that AIR78 is missing his card. Many thanks for your help.

Peter, I believe that you must be right, I just wish I could prove it. Your help is appreciated as always.

The AIR 78 card does appear to be there however it is one of the illegible overexposed cards in image 262 at position 8

You can view original mircrofilm reels at TNA (when it re-opens) which from my experience are fully legible and sharply in focus.
