    Default Lysander confirmation please.

    16-5-40
Borg-Banks,and Lawes were killed. Moule survived.
They were crew of a 13 Sqn Lysander.
Problem is that two a/c serial numbers are linked to this loss.
    Either L6855 or L6885.
    Which was it ?

    Same question for
    15-5-40
    Ollerenshaw and Lucas.
Were they crew in N1260 or L4813 ?

    Also
Pennington and Erskine of 13 Sqn.
Were they crew of L4766 on the 14-5-40 or L4773 on the 19-5-40 ?
    Both became POWs.

    Thanks
    Alex

    Alex,

As you know trying to research Lysander unit activities during May 1940 is a nightmare due to loss of records, etc. 13 Squadron being particularly bad.

It appears Borg-Banks was involved in two separate incidents which have become mixed up in time.
On May 15th his Lysander - serial unknown - was shot down during a reconnaissance over Belgium and crashed between the front lines. Borg-Banks was unhurt but his air gunner AC1 Harry Parmenter Moule suffered a fractured arm. Both were rescued by an armoured car of the 12th Lancers and returned to their unit the following day.
On May 16th or 17th he was lost in Lysander L6885 along with his new air gunner LAC Walter Francis Lawes.
The date of this second loss should be the 17th I believe. I am aware the CWGC has the 16th for their date of death. The information above comes from their casualty file at TNA, AIR 81/386. The serial 'L6855' is only used in the casualty file but this is an error for L6885. L6855 was serving with 613 Squadron at this time and was damaged on 4 August 1940. It was repaired and later flew in India. L6885 was recorded flying operationally with 13 Squadron as late as the morning of May 15th with a different crew (this from the 13 Sqn. Appendices, AIR 27/184).

    Hope this helps.

    Martin.

Thank you Martin, one down, two to go .

    I had 16th, L6885, Bourg-Banks, Laws and third man, H P Moule.reported as injured.
So No third man in L6885, and correct spelling Lawes.
    AB 's L1000 - N9999 only ha L6885 13 SOC 30.7.40.

The only 13 Sqn that I found for the 15th was N1260, crew Lucas and Ollerenshaw.

I found that L4766 and L4771, both 13 Sqn are noted as been "lost/left in France".
