Progress With CC Losses Volume 2 & 3

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I promised to keep people visiting this Thread, up to date with progress on getting the book “Coastal Command Losses – Vol 2” into print and a few days ago, I updated Ross McNeill by email as to progress.

I accepted that a piece on Flight 777 (the DC3 in which the actor Leslie Howard was killed) was not relevant and I also agreed to remove the USAAF/USN losses and these will be inserted later. I was able to finalise a couple of skeleton records which had been causing some problems.

The Air Britain editor has agreed they have sufficient to go forward to print but I await confirmation as to when that is scheduled. I have no idea as to the print run proposed nor the cost and availability, although I have made my views known.

I am now pushing along with the contents of Volume 3 and am making reasonable progress. It is too soon to know when Vol 3 might be finished but I am also looking at a fourth volume which might cover the final ‘maritime’ bits.

Hi Colin,

This is excellent news as I am currently researching the Air Operations and Losses from RAF Wick. for a "Caithness At War" Trail we are creating which will include at least 14 Information Panels measuring 900mm x 1200mm at the former RAF Wick (Which is now Wick John O' Groats Airport). Ross McNeill's Volume one has been invaluable realating to the losses suffered at the airfield for 1939, 1940 & 1941,however I am in the middle of trolling through the record books of the Squadrons based there in 1942, and am having to create a database of each day, listing the mission type, outcome of the mission, Aircraft serial number and code letter, names of the crew and whether they returned safe, were killed in action, injured or taken POW.

We hope to eventually create a monument to all the aircrews lost from the former Coastal Command Scetor Station, so it will be so important that we can account for all the names of those that were lost, becausing missing a name out would be unacceptable.

I eagerly awat your new book to be published.

If you let me have an ordinary email address, I can share some of the manuscript computer files for CC losses in 1942/3.

This will be on condition that you do not use the information for other than the Caithness project.

1944 and 45 have produced over 700 losses and many of these for the Strike Wings operating in Scotland. However, that task is still ongoing and not ready to be shared - sorry!

Something has gone wrong with my system as it seems not to be displaying my latest message but CC Losses Vol 2 is still with Air britain. Got to go now but will deal with topic soonest

Sadly, there is little progress as the manuscript is with Air Britain but progress seems very slow from that which I am used to. Vol 3 taking shape here and Vol 4 is being scoped.

It is 9 months since since I sent the basic manuscript to Air Britain and I am disappointed with progress. I accept that I should have tied down the way A/B works but I did not.

I apologise for the disappointment this will cause to those who have waited so long.
