    Default RAF/RAF OR Service Numbers

RFC/RAF SERVICE NUMBERS (Courtesy of Air Force Deaths site)

At least until the 1950s, the service numbers of RFC and RAF personnel indicated the date and manner of joining the service. The RFC numbering system began at 1 in 1912, the initial allocations being to men who had transferred in from the Royal Engineers and subsequent ones to civilian recruits. The RNAS commenced its own numbering system when it became a separate entity in July 1914 - again commencing with 1, but prefixed by the letter F. When the RAF was formed, RFC men kept their original service numbers. However, as the RNAS numbering system had also begun at 1, all RNAS men inherited by the RAF had 200000 added to their original numbers, and the prefix F was dropped. All RNAS personnel were renumbered in 1918, including the dead. (RNAS squadrons had 200 added to their numbers).

NCOs who were commissioned received new service numbers.

In most cases all the numbers in a block were allocated; figures given in brackets indicate the highest numbers actually issued if the allocation was not total.

    Default Thanks

Thought I'd show appreciation for this - I'm trying to trace a relative who died as a Pilot under Training and your post tells me he joined the service at Padgate in November 1941.

Now I just need to find out why he would be training at 22 AS in South Africa in 1944!

Thanks again - every little helps.

I'd also like to add my appreciation for the above list. It has already proved useful in helping me ascertain that LAC Foxcroft, who i've posted about in a seperate thread, joined the RAF in September 1939 via Padgate.

Is it unusual that he had only progressed as far as the rank of LAC by May 1946?

    Greg,
"Progress" as measured by rank can be a tricky thing, particularly for Other Ranks (or Other Airmen in this case). If you were remustered to a new trade, supposing you had already attained the classification of LAC in your original trade, chances are that you would automatically revert to classification of AC2 or AC1 in your new trade. Aircrew officers never reverted like this, retaininig the rank attained in their original "trade"; for instance if a pilot found it impossible to continue in that role, he could "remuster" (As you know, officers strictly speaking had no "trade" as such - that was for the workers or lower classes!) to Observer or Navigator with his current rank and precedence, and progress from there - no back tracking as for airmen. Such were the advantages of being an officer and a gentleman! In some of the lower ranking ground trades, it was possible to serve throughout WW2 without any upward movement at all, particualrly if you were not ambitious.

    Default Rfc/raf Service Numbers

The list of numbers is very useful but, as I understand, it does not include officers. If this is so, can someone tell me where these can be found? I'm interested in someone whose number, according to the list, would put him as Feb-Sep 1917 RFC - Canadians. As he was born in 1907, this can't be right. Surely numbers were never reissued ... (?)

How about in later years ... it's not a genealogy issue but it would be interesting to know. For example, my own service number (1950s) and those of my intake are not given.

    Hi Mike,

The list is for other ranks only.

The 70,000 series for officers was initially allocated to RAFO but some officers transferred to the RAFVR in Jan 1938 retained their 70,000 service numbers.

Officer service numbers were from blocks allocated to RAF, SR, RAFO, AAF, RAFVR etc. Within these blocks it was in alphabetic order with the next intake starting numerically on from the previous.

Usually, but not always, a transfer between say RAF to RAFVR entailed a change of service number.

Depending on date London Gazette and/or Air Force List can be used to give a service number.

This number had earlier been given to an army man who enlisted 4/3/31, 18th AFA Brigade & was discharged 8/7/31 ---from National Archives of Australia digital record
    E J S Dillworth. Army Number - 422612; Date of birth - 23 August 1907

    Anne,
RAAF numbers in WW2 normally had an "AUS" prefix (and for the same reason RNZAF personnel numbers had an "NZ" prefix"), so that when they were attached to the RAF (or any other service for that matter) there would be no confusion with personnel of other services when they appeared on lists of casualties, promotions, etc. This was particularly important in the case of British Commonwealth personnel under the Empire Air Training Scheme as the RAF was also responsible for all the administration (including pay) of all EATS graduates serving on attachment to the RAF. For reasons best known to themselves, the CWGC has decided that these nationality prefixes are not necessary in this day and age, and omits them from all service numbers appearing on its website, thus attempting to rewrite history. Actually I am probably being a little hard on them here, as the site always includes the "nationality" of the individual concerned, although in truth it is really the nationality of the service itself that is meant. Regardless, all Australian and NZ service numbers should always be shown with their correct nationality prefix during the WW2 period (and up till about 1947) when the RAF considered that they no longer served any purpose as all EATS graduates by this time had gone home. Wartime practices had come to an end as all EATS volunteers were "duration only" personnel, although some remained in the service under new postwar conditions of service. Finally I should add that the "NZ" prefix for wartime personnel was not actually instituted till about July/August 1940, and I imagine the RAAF "AUS" prefix probably came into use about the same time. I am not qualified to offer any thoughts on the introduction of RCAF prefixes - perhaps Hugh Halliday would be able to offer a few hints.

    David,

If you check the Australian service records on the Australian National Archives the mens service number in RAAF documentation and the actualy sign up sheets do not have AUS prefixing them. The AUS or NZ prefixes appear mainly in RAF documents to differentiate, I believe its unfair to claim the CWGC are in error. The Australian War Memorial and Nominall Roll also do not refer to the AUS prefix.

    http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx
    http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/ResearcherScreen.asp

    F/O Rodney Wyben SMITH 402409 + RAAF
    F/Sgt Lindsay Ross WILLIAMS 402429 + RAAF
F/Sgt Herbert William Thornley SLOMAN 402677 + RAAF
Sgt George Reginald UNITT 411412 RAAF

This sample, though small, of men, their service files officially refer to the numbers only, the AUS prefix appears in telex's and some crash reports etc, even yes some of their service records but I don;t think it forms 'part' of their service number other than from an administrative standpoint.

Similarly, the Candian Service records I have recieived, the men enlisted as R.xxxxx becoming J.xxxxxx. Their service files enllistment papers do not carry the prefix Can.

Erroll and Hugh can comment best on this from NZ and CAN point of view.

It has been mentioned before that the RAF list above, should be read as indicating that the group of enlistment numbers began to be used in the period indicated,

I have sadly only two RAF service files to show as examples.

I have one airman from this goup of numbers:
    1815001 to 1820000 Jly 1942 Birmingham
This airman from the upper end of the list, enlisted on 19 March 1943, NOT JULY 1942

And I can't find the second service record to give the example, typical, rubbish filing system!!

Basically, don't read the date in the lists above to mean your airman enlisted that month exactly, it may have been at later date.

Regards and hoping I'm correct in my observations.

Thanks for yours .I was just surprised to see the same service number previously used but for an Army man.As he was discharged soon-ish after enlisting I suppose the number wasn't "used " for a wartime posting, therefore was suitable for re-use by the RAAF ?
